Geography The Kemsky municipal district is located in the northern part of the Republic of Karelia. The district is located in the northern part of the  Republic of Karelia, in the basin of the Kem River, washed by the White Sea from the east. The center of the district is the city of Kem —a port on the shore of the White Sea. It borders on the Loukhsky district in the north, Kalevalsky district in the west, and Belomorsky district in the south. The length of the coastline is about 120 km.
